Sixteen workers were hospitalized after being exposed to improperly mixed pool chemicals at the Great Wolf Lodge in Webster. The incident occurred during the grand opening of the new indoor water park and hotel.
First responders reported that a third-party contractor had mixed two chemicals resulting in a chemical reaction that caused breathing problems. The incident took place in an isolated building separate from the main hotel and water park. According to officials, five people were evacuated from the building, and sixteen employees and contractors were transported to the nearest hospital.
In a statement, the resort confirmed that everyone hospitalized has since been released. The lodge also emphasized that they are “putting additional safeguards in place for our third-party pool chemical vendors and are actively assisting officials as they investigate the matter.”
Officials confirmed that the incident did not disrupt resort and water park operations. However, guests told a local news outlet that they were not notified of the chemical incident before they arrived.
While no guests were harmed this time, the incident highlights the potential risks of improper chemical handling. It's crucial that those responsible for exposing employees and contractors to hazardous chemicals are held accountable to prevent future incidents.
