A construction worker was injured Tuesday afternoon when falling concrete struck an elevator at the historic Battelstein’s building on Main Street near Rusk.

The Houston Fire Department (HFD) responded to the scene around 12:20 p.m. after receiving reports of a high-rise incident.

Upon arrival, firefighters upgraded the call to a rescue operation due to reports of people possibly being trapped. According to a local news station, firefighters conducted a thorough search of the 10-story building and found the injured worker in an elevator outside the building.

Investigators said concrete from the eighth floor had fallen onto the elevator, causing the injury. The worker has not been identified and was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
