The Secret to a Great Day

Have you ever had a day that felt perfect? You woke up energized, everything went smoothly, and you ended the day feeling accomplished. Now, have you ever had a day where the opposite happened—one small mishap spiraled into a frustrating, unproductive mess? The difference between the two isn’t luck—it’s intentionality.

Years ago, I started experimenting with ways to structure my mornings for success. I realized that my day’s trajectory wasn’t dictated by external events, but by the way I prepared myself mentally and physically. After testing dozens of habits, I discovered a simple formula for setting up a great day, every day.

 Here’s my formula:

  1. Wake Up with Intention: Instead of reaching for your phone first thing, take a deep breath and set a clear intention for the day. Ask yourself: "What’s one thing I want to accomplish today?"
Move Your Body: Even if it’s just a few minutes of stretching, moving in the morning sends a signal to your brain that you’re ready to take on the day.

  2. Hydrate: Start your day with a big glass of water. You wouldn’t drive a car on an empty tank—why do that to yourself?

  3. Practice Gratitude: Take a minute to write down or think about three things you’re grateful for. It’s scientifically proven to improve mood and perspective.

  4. Limit Morning Distractions: Don’t dive straight into emails or social media. I like to read a chapter of one fiction book and one non-fiction book every morning—and I read real, physical, hardback books—reading on a screen doesn't count. Instead, take time for something that energizes you—reading, meditating, or simply sitting quietly with a cup of coffee.

When I started following this routine, my stress levels dropped, my productivity soared, and—most importantly—I felt happier. I challenge you to try this for just one week. Set your morning up for success, and watch how it transforms the rest of your day.

Happiness isn’t random. It’s something you create, starting the moment you wake up.
