What happened?

Early Wednesday morning an explosion at the TPC Group Plant in Port Neches, Texas has left three people injured. The ghastly explosion knocked out the windows of nearby homes and businesses. The eruption alarmed residents in nearby communities as the flames and fumes of the blast ascended into the early morning sky. Officials ordered a mandatory evacuation for people living or working near the TPC plant. There was a shelter-in-place order for residents living in the surrounding areas due to health concerns.

TPC Houses Several Dangerous Chemicals

Mike White, a Jefferson County Emergency Management Coordinator, noted that TPC houses several dangerous chemicals within their facility. Including, Butadiene, a colorless gas with a gasoline-like odor. This flammable gas is used to make synthetic rubber items like tires and other plastics. Long-term exposure to Butadiene has been known to cause cardiovascular diseases and cancer. For that reason, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is encouraging residents to stay indoors as they actively monitor the air quality of the surrounding Port Neches area. The American Red Cross is on the scene providing residents with shelter at the First Baptist Church in Nederland.

Injuries Resulting From the Explosion

It is being reported that of the three people injured as a result of the explosion, one person was transported to the Houston Medical Center by helicopter with severe burns. Officials are reporting that one person suffered from a broken arm which likely happened as the chaos from the blast unraveled.
