(March 26th, 2024) At 1:30 AM on March 26, 2024, a container ship struck a support on the Francis Scott Key Bridge causing it to collapse, plunging vehicles into the water. The collapse was declared a "mass casualty incident" and rescue efforts are underway. Below are images from a live stream of the collapse.

The ship that struck the bridge was the Singaporean containership Dali.  This is a young vessel with a history of accidents. It is currently unclear what caused the vessel to strike the bridge.

Given the nature of the accident – a vessel colliding with a bridge – maritime law will likely play a significant role in the investigation and any legal proceedings that follow. The Jones Act is a federal law that provides specific protections for seamen injured while working aboard U.S. flagged vessels in U.S. waters. If crew members on the "Dali" were injured, the Jones Act may offer them legal recourse to seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
