Like every human being on the planet, I have great days, average days, and bad days. I’m pretty sure there’s no way to prevent the bad days, but I’m also pretty sure that there are ways to design your life to increase the number of good days and decrease the number of bad days.

Here’s a little formula I’ve been working on to increase the probability that I will have a great day. This is a work in progress but maybe some of these tips will help you like they’ve helped me:

Brian Beckcom’s “Great Day” formula:

  1. Get a good night’s sleep and get up early;
  2. Drink a big glass of water when you first wake up;
  3. Don’t look at your email, text, social media, or phone for the first 30 minutes of your day (30 minutes is the minimum);
  4. Smile at a stranger;
  5. Surprise someone by saying something unexpectedly nice. Make sure you mean what you say. Be genuine;
  6. Invite someone who doesn’t have many friends for coffee or just call them to let them know you are thinking about them;
  7. Listen more than you talk, and listen as attentively at you can;
  8. If you’re married or you have kids, hug them and tell them you love them;
  9. Meditate or pray;
  10. Spend at least 15 minutes outdoors, and more if you can;
  11. Get some sort of exercise, even if is going for a short walk;
  12. At the end of the day, write down 3 things you are grateful for.
  13. Rinse and repeat.
