Walmart is well-known for its poor working conditions. They have a long history of labor disputes and a strong anti-union culture. Their most significant expense is their labor costs, and they continually look for ways to minimize these costs. Unfortunately, that means taking shortcuts at the expense and safety of their loyal employees.

Walmarts Cuts Costs & Undermines Employee Safety

Walmart consistently explores cutting costs as it pertains to labor. Their work environment does not foster safety, well-being, or advancement. Employees have expressed their inability to be hired from part- to full-time, a lack of proper medical benefits, and inconsistent scheduling that makes their lives difficult.

Walmart has a reputation for being harsh in terms of employees taking breaks, working through mealtimes, and forcing overtime without additional pay. Walmart is known for threatening employees, illegal firings, and forcing employees to purchase new uniforms when they should be providing them for their employees. They are neither accommodating nor understanding, and employees get in trouble for disobeying.

Walmart Fails to Comply with OSHA Regulations

Walmart was forced to update the safety policies at thousands of its stores after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited violations. While they have updated their policies on paper, they are still doing the bare minimum to provide a safe working environment.

Walmart was forced to sign agreements with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) because they frequently violated health and safety regulations. They have repeatedly ignored their obligations and have not taken action to make their work environments safer. Some of the violations include not providing Hepatitis B vaccinations to workers that are responsible for cleaning up blood spills, not informing the workers of symptoms of Hepatitis B, and not maintaining proper unobstructed access to their trash compactor management box.

OSHA confirmed that even three years after Walmart agreed to improve their unsafe work environments, they had not made any changes to their unsafe work environments to comply. Walmart has repeatedly prioritized making money over the safety of its hard-working employees.

Walmart Puts Profits Over Safety

Walmart actively takes steps to provide its employees with cheaper insurance than the industry standard. Walmart has also used taxpayer subsidies to provide these benefits without ever addressing the most important question: whether or not the company pays its employees enough to afford health care. They also cut their insurance benefits for part-time employees, leaving many of them with no health coverage. Walmart continues to make decisions in the best interest of the corporation, regardless of whether it comes at the expense of their hard-working employees.

Walmart has penalized workers for taking time off for lawful reasons, such as taking time off to care for sick family members or who are sick themselves. These actions not only foster a negative work environment, but when sick employees come to work, that creates an unsafe work environment for all. It creates a heightened risk of employees getting too ill to properly complete their job and infecting other employees with illness.
