A Midland woman was killed Friday evening after a commercial truck pulling a trailer struck her electric bicycle from behind, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The fatal crash happened around 7:35 p.m. on February 6 at the intersection of Business 20 Service Road and County Road 1103 in Midland, Texas. DPS identified the victim as Tamara Jan Cates, 63. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
According to DPS, Ms. Cates was riding a Dakeya electric bicycle eastbound on the Business 20 Service Road. A 2020 International commercial truck towing a trailer was traveling in the same direction when it struck the e-bike from behind.
No additional details have been released about speed, lighting conditions, or driver actions. Investigators have not said whether charges will be filed.
E-bike riders have little protection in a collision with a large truck. Commercial vehicles require more time and distance to stop. Trailers create wide blind spots and reduce a driver’s ability to see smaller vehicles ahead.
When a cyclist or e-bike rider is hit from behind, investigators often look at:
These factors matter because trucking companies and drivers are held to higher safety standards than passenger vehicles.
In crashes involving commercial trucks, important evidence often exists long before families know to ask for it.
This can include:
Some of this evidence can be lost or erased if it is not preserved early.
When a fatal crash is under investigation, families often feel unsure about what steps matter. While every case is different, certain actions can help protect important information.
This may include:
It is also important to avoid speculation. Responsibility in a commercial truck crash is determined through facts, not assumptions.
Fatal e-bike crashes involving commercial trucks raise serious legal questions. These cases often require careful review of evidence, safety rules, and trucking practices.
Families deserve time to grieve and space to seek guidance when they are ready. Understanding how these cases are investigated and how evidence is preserved can make a meaningful difference in the months ahead.
