Shortly after 1 p.m., a fire broke out on a decommissioned offshore oil rig platform in Sabine Pass, Texas. For a short time, nine shipyard workers were trapped about 100 feet from the fire until they were rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter.
The rescued workers were rushed safely off the rig and were checked out by paramedics. All nine workers were returned to their families and are happy and grateful to be alive.
Offshore oil rigs can be very dangerous and at this juncture, it is still unclear what caused the massive flames and explosions. As of 10:00 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2022, the fire was still burning and firefighters were waiting for the blaze to burn itself out.
The investigation cannot begin until the flames are out, the platform will then need to be lowered to be fully inspected. According to the onsite manager, there were not flammable liquids to ignite the fire again, though that remains to be confirmed and the situation is being monitored.
