The Power of Saying “No”

Written by Brian Beckcom | 04/15/2025

Do you ever feel like you’ve got way too much stuff on your plate, way too many commitments, too much to juggle and balance and keep track of? Start saying “No” as often as you can.

We often pack our days so full that we’re left running on fumes. We convince ourselves that being constantly busy is how we prove our value. But it’s okay—actually, it’s vital—to protect our energy and our time. When we say “no” to tasks that drain us, we make room for the people and projects that matter most and that means more energy, more happiness, and less stress.

I learned this lesson the hard way. Not too long ago, I was juggling too many commitments and ignoring the signs of burnout. My family could see it. My friends could feel it. And honestly, so I knew that I was pushing myself way too hard. That’s when I realized that in order to give my best, I had to have something left to give—physically, mentally, and emotionally. So I made it a point to say “no” to almost everything.

Saying “no” frees us to live a better life. It also helps us re-focus on the good stuff: the people we love, the causes we care about, and the goals we truly want to meet. Every time you say “no” to tasks that don’t align with your priorities, you’re actually saying “yes” to a healthier, happier, and more productive you.

So this April, let’s all try the power of “no” together. Let’s remove the clutter on our calendars and in our heads. Let’s say “yes” to the things that bring us meaning and “no” to the things that only bring us stress. It might feel a bit uncomfortable at first, but trust me—you’ll find that what really matters has the chance to shine. And that’s when the magic happens.
