On October 23, 2013, Captain Wren Thomas's vessel, the C-Retriever, was attacked by Nigerian pirates. In order to save the lives of his crew and of himself, he and the other American on board surrendered and were taken captive.
CNN's Kyung Lah sat down with Captain Thomas to discuss how he survived the ordeal and how it has changed him.
Captain Thomas, employed by Edison Chouest Offshore and contracted to do supply runs for Chevron USA, operating in the Gulf of Guinea.
He and the other American on board were kidnapped and held hostage for more than two weeks. "I knew I was going to die," said Captain Phillips. He and the other American were released after a ransom was paid to the pirates.
