At approximately 12 a.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2017, a charter bus and pickup truck collided in a head-on wreck in Hedgepeth County, Texas. The collision happened about four miles west of Dell City, Texas on US Highway 62/180.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reports that the pickup truck crossed the center line and crashed into the charter bus. The driver of the pickup and a passenger on the charter bus were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck has been identified as Gary Lawson, 51, of Hobbs, New Mexico. The other victim has been identified as Arcadio Duran Jr., 48, of El Paso, Texas. Mr. Duran was a track coach and social sciences teacher at Irvin High School.
Twenty-five students and nine faculty members from El Paso, Austin, Irvin, Andress, Chapin, Jefferson, and Bowie High Schools in El Paso were driving back from a UIL track meet in Lubbock, Texas. The surviving passengers crawled through a window to evacuate the bus after the wreck. Emergency medical technicians triaged the injured, transporting at least 17 people to Del Sol and UMC hospitals, treating other people at the scene, and examining the rest of the passengers for signs of injury.
While the DPS is continuing to investigate this wreck, families should launch their own independent investigations to prove who was responsible for the wreck, if any factors such as distracted or fatigued driving contributed to the wreck, or if any federal motor carrier safety rules were violated by the charter bus. Families don't have time to wait for the results of the DPS investigation. While bills pile up, adjusters make calls, and questions mount, families need help.
