Crane Operator Exposed to MTBE at Port of Houston Files Suit

On March 9, 2015, a shelter in place order was issued at the Houston Ship Channel when a bulk tanker collided with a chemical tanker. Two ships collided in the fog, and MTBE was released into the air. Workers closest to the collision site evacuated, but workers further away were instructed to shelter in place as were residents in the areas surrounding the Ship Channel.

The amount of MTBE that was released is unknown. John is a dockworker in the Ship Channel at Barbours Cut, a large cargo terminal. An experienced crane operator, John works in the unit atop the fixed dock cranes at Barbours Cut, loading and unloading shipping containers from transatlantic cargo vessels. Due to John's proximity to the collision, he was exposed to MTBE. He became very sick, experiencing symptoms of exposure to MTBE.

After John was transported to the hospital the afternoon of the collision, the Barbours Cut facility was evacuated.  Since being exposed to MTBE, John has experienced worsening respiratory symptoms and has had to be hospitalized several times due to breathing issues. John has hired our firm to investigate the incident on his behalf.
