What is postconcussion syndrome?

If you suffered a head injury in an accident that resulted in a concussion, you may have heard of “postconcussion syndrome” or postconcussive syndrome.  This is a complication of a concussion that is unfortunately not well understood.  It is when a concussion victim suffers from concussion symptoms for weeks or even months after the actual accident.

People involved in an accident like a car crash or slip and fall are more likely to develop postconcussion syndrome than people who suffer a sports injury.  Experts don’t know why.

Symptoms vary by person and include many of the typical concussion symptoms like headaches, dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, loss of memory, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, depression, or sensitivity to noise and light.

If you experience postconcussoin syndrome, your doctor will treat the symptoms that you experience.  Because the symptoms suffered are unique to each person, there is no universal treatment or diagnosis for this syndrome.
