What is an annular tear?

If you hurt your back in a workplace accident or in a car or truck wreck, you could be suffering from a torn disk.  An annular tear is a small spinal disk tear, and is the most common cause of minor sciatica or brachialgia.

Annular tears can lead to pinching, irritation, or compression of the nerve root which can cause you to feel pain, tingling, weakness or numbness in various parts of your body.  Most of the time annular tears will resolve on their own, although depending on the severity of your symptoms you may need to consider pain management techniques.

If the symptoms you are suffering from do not resolve six months after your accident – of if they get worse – then you may need to consider surgery.  Your doctor will be able to advise you on treatment options and what you can expect down the road after having suffered from a back injury like this.
