We all know the dangers of drunk driving, but sometimes we could use a reminder. That is why Mothers Against Drunk Driving reminds us to plan ahead if we intend to drink alcohol at holiday parties. MADD’s data shows that the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day includes some of the most dangerous days for drunk driving deaths.
MADD was founded by a mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver. It is the nation’s largest nonprofit working to protect families from drunk driving and underage drinking. MADD has organized a yearly Tie One On For Safety red ribbon campaign for 26 years. This is the organization’s signature public awareness project. Drivers across the country display MADD red ribbons on their cars and trucks as a pledge to drive sober. The ribbons also signify support for law enforcement officers. These officers will be participating in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.
The Christmas holiday (which includes Christmas Eve and the surrounding holiday weekend) can be the deadliest for drunk driving accidents. MADD provides these statistics for three recent years:
- 2010: 96 people killed
- 2009: 95 people killed
- 2008: 138 people killed
