In July 2001, the FDA issued a warning against transvaginal mesh devices. According to the FDA, these devices may cause serious, long-term medical complications.

Women who experience pelvic organ prolapse (POP) have in the past had transvaginal mesh devices implanted. The objective of the mesh devices was to strengthen a woman's vaginal tissue and support the weight of the surounding organs.

What is Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP)?

Following a pregnancy or other medical condition, some women's vaginal tissue may weaken.  When that occurs, a women may experience a medical condition called "Pelvic Organ Prolapse," or "POP."  POP can cause the bladder, uterus, bowel, and other organs to shift their position.

POP can lead to pelvic discomfort  It can also disrupt sexual function, urinary function, and bowel function. Transvaginal mesh devices (also called "pelvic slings") were orginally designed to prevent this shifting by strengthening the surrounding vaginal wall.

What Problems Do Vaginal Mesh Devices Cause?

Transvaginal mesh has been known to cause problems.In July 2008, after receiving numerous complaints from patients about the devices, the FDA sent doctors a letter cautioning them about the problems potentially caused by mesh devices.

Common complaints include:

  1. Skin breakage;
  2. Bleeding;
  3. Device protrusion;
  4. Urinary incontinence;
  5. Serious infection;
  6. Vaginal pain;
