A League City, Texas woman who authorities said was trying to commit suicide has been sentenced to 25 years in state prison for her actions in an automobile crash that killed her 4-year-old daughter.
Sonya Nicole Marin, 29, was sentenced by District Judge Terry Flenniken, who ruled that Marin had used the vehicle she was driving as a “deadly weapon.”
Marin will have to serve at least half of her 25-year sentence before she becomes eligible for parole.
Marin was charged in 2005 with injury to a child (serious bodily injury resulting in death).
According to authorities, she was sitting on the roadside on Highway 36 north of Brenham Oct. 20, 2005 when she suddenly drove across the roadway and into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer rig.
Marin’s 4-year-old daughter, who was in the back seat, died from injuries she received in the wreck and Marin was injured.
