Conroe residents have been living with red light cameras for the last eight months, and the city council is thinking about adding more of the devices. Over this time, the city of Conroe has collected about $750,000 in fees and has issued 16,749 citations. By expanding the program city officials expect to generate $1.2 million from red light camera runners in the next fiscal year.
To decide where to place the cameras the Conroe Police Department is working with the red light camera vendor American Traffic Solutions. To study accident-prone intersections, video cameras are placed in intersections and data is gathered about the number of red light runners compared to the number of wrecks caused by red light running. The intersection under consideration is Loop 336 West at Plantation Drive.
Critics of the program contend that it is just a money-making venture for the city and the vendor, as there is no proof that the cameras actually reduce the likelihood of a crash caused by red light running.
The only statistics available from the police department were a 10 to 15 percent reduction in accidents across the city, but that’s citywide and does not show the impact specifically from the intersections with red light cameras.
