A sheriff’s deputy on his way back to Liberty, TX appears to have lost control of his car, causing his own death. The deputy, Odell McDuffie Jr. was found dead at the scene of the accident.
Investigators believe that McDuffie, a Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputy, overcorrected on a turn, which caused him to lose control. His car left the road and crashed into several trees. The impact caused his patrol car to burst into flames.
The crash happened in the 1400 block of FM 770 in Saratoga, not long after McDuffie had dropped a juvenile off at the Hardin County Detention Center. McDuffie had been with the Liberty Police Department for 17 years. He also worked in the civil division and was a mental health officer. According to his colleagues, he was well regarded for his work with the mentally ill.
Sadly, McDuffie leaves behind a wife and three daughters. It is not believed that any other factors contributed to the crash, nor is it known if McDuffie was wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck.
Single vehicle accidents can be very dangerous, as they often involve a distracted driver veering off the road and crashing into an object. It can be difficult to recover from overcorrecting a vehicle, especially on a turn.
