A Houston bicycle rider has died after lingering in hospital for 13 days after being struck by a hit and run driver a few weeks ago. The biker, Harold Williams, 67, was hit while crossing the intersection at Southmore and Highway 288.
The driver who hit him was a woman in a champagne-colored Chevrolet Tahoe. The accident was witnessed by the driver behind the Tahoe, Tena Betts. Betts called 911 after seeing the accident happen, and stayed on the phone until help arrived. She claims that the Tahoe driver was responsible for the accident, turning into Williams and knocking him down.
Betts claims that it was obvious that Williams was badly injured. She added that the driver who hit him, who has not yet been identified, got out of the Tahoe with a young girl. The Tahoe driver claimed she was leaving the scene of the accident to follow the ambulance to the hospital.
She did not. The Tahoe driver and the young girl she was with have since disappeared, taking no responsibility for the accident. There is no word yet on whether police have been able to find the Tahoe driver.
Funeral services for Williams were held Friday February 25, 2011 at the First Methodist Houston Church in Houston. He was laid to rest Murphy-Jones Cemetery in Richmond, TX.
