Texas Rangers Draft Baseball Player Despite Spinal Cord Injury

Posted on Jul 06, 2011

The Texas Rangers have drafted a college ball player who can’t currently throw a baseball, hit a pitch, or even walk – but they believe that his inspirational attitude and impressive drive was enough to make the cut.

Last season, Johnathan Taylor was playing college baseball when he ran into his teammate in the outfield during a game. He broke his neck in the collision and has been partially paralyzed ever since. While his doctors admit that his progress has been great – and that he seems to be regaining mobility – it is unclear if he will ever walk again or if he will ever return to the game of baseball.

Despite these challenges, the Texas Rangers decided to pick Taylor for their team in the thirty-third round of the draft. Why would they draft a player who might never help them win a game? The Rangers explained that Taylor would have likely been drafted if the accident never took place, and that the young man is an inspiration to all ball players who face adversity.

Currently, Taylor has visited the Rangers and observed practices but is otherwise fully focused on his physical therapy. His mother, who faced a difficult rehabilitation following a car accident a few years ago, remains at his side.
