Texas City Worker Sues BP Over Head Injury At Refinery

Posted on Jun 17, 2011

An employee of behemoth oil refinery BP Products North America is suing the company and his manager after he said he suffered a head injury and right shoulder injury in a preventable on-the-job accident in Galveston, Texas. He is seeing an unspecified amount of compensation for his injuries and has asked for a jury trial.

According to the worker injury lawsuit filed in Galveston County, employee Mateo Espinoza said that he and a group of others were asked to move a 40-foot pipe that was suspended from the ceiling with cables. During the process of moving the pipe, a cable snapped and the lead pipe fell onto Espinoza’s head and then rolled onto his shoulder, leaving him with serious injuries. The extent of his injuries or whether his injuries have had any lasting effect on his ability to continue work is not known at this time.

The lawsuit, which implicates both BP products as well as the area manager Keith Casey, states that as the owner of the business and the property, the company should have know that the area and task was dangerous to workers; and, as the manager in the area, Casey should also been aware of the unreasonable risk to workers.
