Texas drivers, if you own a Cadillac CTS vehicle you need to know about this recall. Certain models from the 2009 and 2010 model lines have been recalled for airbag defects. These defects increase your risk of being hurt or killed in a car crash.
According to General Motors, a total of 20,224 Cadillac CTS All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and CTS-V model vehicles are being recalled. These vehicles were all recalled in the United States (the company claims that recalls are not necessary in other countries, as those countries have mandatory seatbelt laws. So, the defect exists elsewhere but GM does not believe that they need to recall affected cars).
The defect was uncovered when the cars failed to adequately protect a small, unbelted (not wearing a seat belt) female. This means that the cars failed to meet a federal safety standard. In this case the risk of damage to a small female’s femur (thigh bone) in a frontal crash is greater than allowed by law.
Tests revealed that in a frontal crash a portion of the vehicle’s glove box could hit an unbelted passenger’s leg. The part has to move in order to deploy the airbag, but should not cause excessive damage to the passenger.
As a part of the recall, GM dealers will replace the glove box in affected Cadillac CTS models for no cost. So far no injuries related to this recall have been reported.
