Being involved in a Texas automobile accident is a terrifying experience. The accident itself is always frightening, but once the initial shock subsides, victims are left wondering: will the emergency response team get here in time?
This is a very real concern. A recent study in Spain confirms that the amount of time it takes for emergency responders to respond can make a difference between life and death for accident victims. In fact, a difference in response time of as little at 10 minutes has a surprising impact on death rates for accident victims.
The study examined 1,463 accidents, looking at when the accidents took place, when calls were made to the emergency response teams, and when the teams arrived on site. The study’s authors found that if emergency services could arrive 10 minutes faster – on average 15 minutes after a wreck – there would be a one-third reduction in crash deaths.
This holds true for both conventional roadways and highways, although with higher-speed highway accidents the accident death rate is high within minutes after a crash. This is likely due to the more serious nature of high-speed highway wrecks, which usually result in worse injuries than accidents on slower roads.
The bottom line? In order for Texas accident victims to have the best chance of survival after a car or truck wreck, emergency response teams must do everything they can to arrive at the scene as quickly as possible.
