After two Texas men died in an on-the-job accident at a radio tower, investigators are trying to understand how the fatal worker accident took place and whether or not it could have been prevented.
Last month, 32-year-old Paul Aliff III and 29-year-old Ernesto Garcia were helping build a radio tower when both fell from the structure and landed 340 feet below. Both died at the scene of the accident and many wondered why neither men were saved by the safety harnesses that they were wearing.
After the emergency 911 call to the police was released, more details of the construction worker deaths are becoming clear. The call, made by a worker at the radio tower who was on the ground at the time of the accident, seems to explain that the fall was the result of a gin pole malfunction. The gin pole, which is clasped to the top of the worksite, helps with the further construction of the tower. When it became unclasped, it apparently struck the two men. It remains a mystery, however, why the men’s safety harnesses did not break their fall.
The fatal Texas worker accident is being investigated by Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
