Six bus accident victims landed in the emergency room at the University of Texas Medical Branch after a crash between a city bus and a stalled SUV. The accident happened in the late morning on 61st Street near the Offatts Bayou Bridge, and stalled traffic for nearly an hour and a half.
The SUV had stalled in the outside lane on 61st street when it was hit by the Island Transit bus. According to investigators the bus driver was trying to change lanes to avoid the SUV but was unable to move or stop in time.
There was only one person in the SUV at the time of the wreck, as two other occupants had gotten out to walk down the road to seek help. When the collision happened, the lone occupant, a woman, was thrown to the rear part of the SUV, and suffered critical injuries.
On the bus, the driver refused treatment, while 5 other people were taken to the hospital for treatment. One bus passenger broke a leg, and the other victims were not injured critically. The bus was only carrying six passengers at the time of the crash.
No word on whether or not Galveston police will file charges in this case. Because buses are large vehicles and contain passengers who often do not wear seatbelts, accidents can be very serious. As in this case, passenger vehicles hit by a bus can suffer a great deal of damage.
