A medical condition may be to blame for a tragic one-vehicle collision that took the life of Bonham Elementary’s school principal.
The principal, James Goggin, 55, crashed his Mazda CX-7 into a concrete barrier lining the 3100 block of Northwest Freeway. Police investigators believe that Goggin crashed when he lost control of his vehicle, which may have happened as the result of a seizure or some other medical condition.
After the crash Goggin was taken by paramedics to North Cypress Medical Center to be treated. Unfortunately, Goggin died from the injuries he sustained in the crash. No word yet on what medical condition may have contributed to his death.
It is not unusual for accidents to happen as the result of a pre-existing medical condition, or from a sudden, unexpected medical event. Drivers can suffer from seizures because they are epileptic, or they can suffer blackouts if they are diabetic, or can experience a heart-attack, brain aneurysm or other health complication while behind the wheel.
In some cases it is the medical emergency that kills the driver, not the resulting crash. Sadly, however, some times the medical event is not deadly in itself, but when it happens in a car the resulting accident can take the driver’s life.
