Researchers examine the link between brain injuries and depression

Posted on Dec 23, 2010

Have you or someone you love suffered a brain injury?  Did any of your doctors talk to you about depression?  According to researchers, within the first year after a traumatic brain injury severe depression is common.  However, TBI victims suffering from depression rarely get the treatment they need.

It is important for doctors and patients to understand how depression following a TBI can not only affect an accident victim’s quality of life, but can also hinder recovery.  Brain injuries are most commonly caused by automobile accidents, but can also happen after a workplace accident, trip and fall, or in combat.

At least one study revealed that TBI victims are eight times more likely to suffer major depression than those individuals with no brain injury – and this estimate may be conservative.  It isn’t clear whether the depression is because of a change in the brain after a TBI or if it is a side-effect of victims struggling to make life work after a head injury.

TBI victims who suffer from major depression may experience an increase in anxiety, have poor self-esteem, perceive that their health is worse than others, and have a worse quality of life than other people.

The authors of the study hope that doctors can be educated about the link between TBI and severe depression, so that more accident victims can receive help for depression after a brain injury.
