A Port Arthur firefighter on vacation with friends in Galveston County fell to his death after a balcony accident this weekend.
According to the Houston Chronicle, 24-year-old Steven McShan of Lumberton, Texas, was visiting a friend’s residence in Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula at the time of his death. He was on the second-floor balcony of a beach house and attempting to climb onto a third-floor balcony when one of the balcony railings broke, leading to his fall. He landed forty feet below and was rushed to a Galveston hospital where he died shortly after his arrival.
Witnesses at the scene of the fatal fall accident said that McShan was climbing to the third floor balcony because some children were playing there.
The Galveston County Sheriff's Office is investigating, but say that the initial information that they have regarding the off-duty firefighter suggests a blameless accident. It is not clear who the owner of the home is and who is responsible for the safety of the balcony railings.
McShan had been a firefighter in Port Arthur for two years, and his captain told the media that the young man was a ambitious and hardworking member of the department. A benefit account has been opened at Five Point Credit Union to help McShan's family with funeral expenses.
