Visitors to the Texas Renaissance Festival were being carefully monitored by the police this year, as law enforcement officers cracked down on drinking and driving by festivalgoers. This was the first time in the festival’s 36 year history that law enforcement officers purposefully patrolled the area around the event.
The Vehicular Crimes Unit for the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office was on the lookout for drivers leaving the festival who looked as though they were driving while intoxicated. Their efforts netted nine DWI arrests on one day and three on another.
The police viewed their efforts as a success, as there were no fatal crashes after the Renaissance Festival. Festival attendees were warned that DWI enforcement would be in effect the day before the festival started. The goal was to warn festival goers to have fun, but in a responsible way.
About 60,000 people attended the Renaissance Festival the weekend of the crackdown – record weekend attendance for the year. The festival’s general manager believes that the attention given to driving safety made festival patrons feel safer about attending the event.
Special events like the Renaissance Festival are always a headache for local police and state troopers. The increase in traffic combined with the potential for intoxicated drivers can lead to serious road and highway accidents.
