Pickup truck driver accused of killing three in Houston rollover crash

Posted on Nov 24, 2010

Three people are dead after a fatal rollover accident involving a pickup truck.  The truck’s driver, Jose Marvin Sarmientos, had just left a nightclub with three passengers early in the morning when he lost control of his vehicle.

The pickup truck slammed into a concrete road divider, then sped across several lanes of traffic before rolling over and bursting into flames.  After the pickup came to rest, Sarmientos kicked out one of the windows, escaped from the burning vehicle, then fled the scene of the accident.

Sarmientos’ three passengers were less fortunate.  Maria Castillo, 18, Mayra Castillo, 22, and Marvin Garcia, 19, all died in the crash.  The driver was arrested thanks to an anonymous tip to police about six hours later near I-45 and the Bay Area Boulevard.

Webster police have charged Sarmientos with three counts of accident involving injury or death.  His bond was set at $300,000, but he chose to remain in Webster City Jail.  In addition to charges stemming from the fatal pickup truck crash, Sarmientos also faces federal charges of failing to show up for a deportation hearing.

Sarmientos is in the United States illegally, and is originally from El Salvador.  There have been other cases in Texas of illegal immigrants fleeing to avoid charges or deportation after a serious auto accident, which is a concern if police do not arrest or detain suspects immediately after a crash.
