Suffering from a traumatic brain injury is bad enough, but what happens when you have to rely on the care of other people to stay alive? Some severely injured brain injury victims may find themselves needing around-the-clock care or the care of professional nurses or caregivers.
This can be a tough adjustment for the victim and their family, but the situation becomes that much harder if the victim doesn’t trust their caregivers. A tragic case in the United Kingdom shows what can happen when a caregiver is negligent.
A 37 year old man, Jamie Merrett, was badly hurt in a 2002 car wreck. As a result of the accident, Merrett was paralyzed from the neck down, and required a ventilator to breathe. He was still able to communicate from his wheelchair – but that is no longer the case.
Merrett was concerned about the quality of care he was receiving, and asked that a hidden camera be installed in his room. The camera caught a tragic event – one of his nurses accidentally turned off his life support machine, leaving him without oxygen for 21 minutes until the problem could be fixed.
Unfortunately, this was too long to go without oxygen. Merrett now only has the mental capacity of a child and has lost the ability to speak properly due to a brain injury he suffered as a result of losing life support for 21 minutes.
