More effort needed in studying concussions, brain injuries in Texas?

Posted on Mar 31, 2011

As the issue of concussions becomes more and more prominent in the news, a group is forming to study the issue of concussions and brain injuries in an attempt to make sporting events safer for players. The group is forming in North Carolina, but similar efforts are needed in Texas to address the same issues.

It isn't known exactly how many concussions or brain injuries occur on Texas ball fields or in traumatic Texas accidents, but what is known is that these injuries can be difficult to detect and have serious consequences.

A team comprised of doctors, parents, coaches and equipment manufacturers hopes to study the issue. Their first meeting is in May, and if successful their efforts could be duplicated elsewhere.

Often people think of a concussion or brain injury as something that happens in a serious crash, a workplace accident, or in a fall. However, many sports carry a risk of head injury for players, beloved sports like ice-hockey, baseball, basketball, football, and more.

Whether a concussion or brain injury happens on the sport field or in a tragic car wreck, the results are similar. These brain injuries are difficult to diagnose, often difficult to treat, and the victim's future difficult to predict. Any efforts towards more research or better safety recommendations will benefit athletic kids, adults and ultimately anyone unfortunate enough to suffer a brain injury.
