A man was life-flighted last Tuesday evening, October 14, 2008, after he was ejected from a pickup truck that was involved in a two-vehicle crash. The man was taken to East Texas Medical Center Tyler.
The accident took place on U.S. Highway 59 north, near FM 2021 in Redland. Traffic was stopped in both directions on the busy highway by police and emergency personnel. The helicopter landed on the road and attended to the injured man. Two other individuals involved in the wreck were also taken to the hospital.
Witnesses of the crash said that just after 5:00 PM, a silver Ford Escape was traveling on the inside north lane when it tried to make a right turn and hit a red Nissan pickup truck that was traveling next to it. The impact of the collision caused both vehicles to spin and veer off onto the shoulder and nearby woods.
Alan Castillo, a 22-year-old man, was driving the pickup truck with his sister Genesis Castillo, a 20-year-old woman, inside, while Jose Escobeda, a 19-year-old man, sat in the bed of the truck. When the two vehicles crashed, Escobeda, who was unrestrained, was thrown from the bed of the truck onto the side of the road.
Escobeda was taken by helicopter to East Texas Medical Center Tyler, while the unidentified young woman and boy in the Ford Escape were taken by ambulance before the police arrived on the scene of the accident. The extent of their injuries is not yet known.
According to the witness, Bradley Goodwin of Redland, “The lady had her blinker on and turned and hit the truck behind the driver’s side. The guy in the back flew out and rolled all over the road. He’s lucky to be alive.”
Department of Public Safety Trooper David Henry said that fault had not been assigned to either driver. He did say that it appeared that the Ford Escape hit the pickup truck while it attempted to change lanes.
