A federal judge has rejected claims that the
government violated the rights of victims of the deadly explosions at
Texas City’s BP refinery in 2005 when the government agreed to a deal
in which BP pleaded guilty to criminal charges and was fined $50
million.
Attorneys for the victims — who said they weren’t
properly consulted about the plea deal — said they plan to appeal the
judge’s decision. Meanwhile, the judge has yet to rule on the victims’
other complaints, which suggest that the $50 million fine is too
lenient.
The victims argued that the plea deal violated their
rights under the Crime Victims Rights Act of 2004. They said they
should have been notified and had a chance to weigh in on the deal
before it was brokered.
