Houston drunk driver charged in fatal Harris County car wreck

Posted on Mar 20, 2011

A man accused of contributing to the deaths of a pregnant 34 year old woman and her 12 year old son on the 610 loop at the Ship Channel bridge has been charged. The driver, Moises DeJesus Alvarenga, 27, is accused of making an unsafe lane change, striking the vehicle in which the victims were traveling.

Alvarenga was driving a Chrysler Seabring north on the East Loop when he allegedly made an unsafe lane change, striking an Astro van containing six people. When the van driver tried to avoid hitting Alvarenga, he instead struck a concrete wall.

The woman, Luz Campos, and her son David were thrown from the van, and tumbled over the bridge, landing below on the highway. They both died at the scene of the accident. Four other van occupants were taken to Memorial Herman-Texas Medical Center in fair condition.

Not only did Houston resident Alvarenga contribute to the fatal wreck, but he also fled the scene of the accident with his passenger. When arrested later, he confessed to his role in the crash. He has been charged with two counts of accident involving injury.

At this time Alvarenga is being held in Harris County jail with a $200,000 bail. As he is a Honduran national, he also has an immigration hold. According to investigators Alvarenga fled the scene of the accident because he does not have a license to drive, is in the country illegally and had been drinking.
