Goodyear issues Dunlop trailer tire recall

Posted on Sep 28, 2010

Nearly 12,000 Goodyear trailer tires have been recalled due to the possibility that they may experience “air loss” in the tread / belt area.  Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is recalling these Dunlop SP193 tires that were manufactured between January 24 and May 29, 2010.

The recall came through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation.  The NHTSA noted that underinflated tires increase the risk of a crash.  If these Dunlop tires do indeed lose air while in use, they could increase the chance that a driver or vehicle passengers will be injured or killed in a wreck.

Affected Dunlop SP193 tires are size 295/75R22.5.  As a part of the recall, Goodyear will notify owners of record about the potential for failure.  The tires will need to be inspected for defects.  If the defect is not present, then the tire was not affected by the problem.  Tires that do present the defect will need to be replace.

The recall is expected to “officially” start the end of September.  Affected Dunlop tires will be replaced by Goodyear dealers free of charge.

Earlier this year Goodyear was asked by a jury to pay $5.6 million to a couple injured when their RV crashed.  The wreck was blamed on defective Goodyear G159 tires; Goodyear also had to settle in about a dozen other related cases.
