Galveston rollover wreck at intersection known for T-bone collisions

Posted on Jan 30, 2011

A Galveston intersection well-known for being unsafe was the location of a rollover wreck that could have been very serious.  The intersection, at Interstate 45 and 61 Street is known for being the site of T-bone collisions (in 2009 alone, 20 drivers ran the light on I-45, crashing into drivers on 61st).

In this accident, a Houston driver in a Toyota pickup truck heading east on the I-45 frontage road ran the light at 61st street.  As a result, he crashed into a Galveston driver heading north on 61st street.  The force of the collision caused the Toyota pickup truck to roll over several times until it came to rest on its side.

Surprisingly, neither driver was badly hurt in the crash.  In fact, neither one needed medical treatment.  Other drivers have unfortunately not been so lucky.  A woman hit in a T-bone crash in October is still hospitalized with serious injuries.

Why is this intersection so deadly?  According to investigators, in nearly 50 percent of the accidents at this intersection the drivers running the red light claim to have been confused by the traffic signals.  The lights at the I-45 frontage road and 61st Street intersection give some drivers the impression that it is okay for them to proceed, when in fact they have a red light.

An $8 million flyover to 61st Street has been recommended in order to avoid future accidents, but the city of Galveston has not yet put aside the money for this project.
