A man accused of causing the deaths of two teenagers in a La Marque drunk driving accident has pleaded guilty to the charges against him. Jim Howard III, 28, plead guilty to two charges of intoxication manslaughter and two charges of intoxication assault.
The accident happened when Howard rear-ended the vehicle in which four teens were riding last march in La Marque. The accident was so serious that one teen, Samantha Romero, 17, died at the scene and Raquel Martinez, 17, died two weeks later from injuries she sustained in the wreck. The two other teenagers were seriously hurt in the crash.
After the accident Howard was also hospitalized because of the injuries he sustained. According to police, testing uncovered that he had been drinking while driving. His blood alcohol level (BAC) was two and a half times greater than the legal limit of 0.08 in Texas.
After being released from the hospital, Howard was taken directly to Galveston County Jail. He is also being held for failure to register as a sex offender, and is being held in lieu of $1 million in bonds.
Now that Howard has pled guilty to the charges against him, he will soon find out his fate at his punishment hearing in the 122nd District Court.
