Future epilepsy risk higher for traumatic brain injury victims

Posted on Nov 29, 2010

The uncertain nature of many traumatic brain injuries can make the future for TBI victims uncertain.  There is so much about the brain that scientists and doctors do not yet understand, so it can be difficult to predict what will happen down the road after a person has suffered a serious head injury.

Unfortunately, recent research suggests a link between traumatic brain injuries and epilepsy.  A study published this past summer in the American Academy of Neurology’s journal revealed that solders suffering from TBIs had a much higher risk of epilepsy – even decades after first being hurt.

The findings were so compelling that the researchers recommended that all veteran soldiers who had once suffered a traumatic brain injury be screened for post-traumatic epilepsy, no matter how far in the past their TBI occurred (about 22 percent of those studied developed post-traumatic epilepsy – 13 percent not until 14 years after their injury).  The findings suggest that all traumatic brain injury patients may require long-term neurological care – an important point of consideration for accident victims suffering from a TBI.

This study highlights the importance of considering your future after an accident-induced traumatic brain injury.  When you negotiate for a settlement or go to court to fight for fair compensation after an accident, it is important that your future be taken into consideration – especially your future risk of developing disorders like epilepsy because of your TBI.
