An odd tractor-trailer accident on Interstate 45 outside of Houston made national headlines this week after the trailer of the vehicle detached from the cab and became stuck on an overhead sign for the I-45 exit of Airline Drive.
The Tuesday night accident closed most lanes of the interstate for hours because authorities worried that the weight of the empty trailer would cause the overhead sign to fall on the roadway below. Luckily, no one, including the truck driver, was harmed in the crash.
How did the Houston truck accident take place? Houston Police believe that the truck bed’s hydraulic arm was engaged while the big rig was on the road, lifting the front of the trailer a number of feet in the air. When the truck attempted to pass under a freeway sign, the trailer became caught and detached from the cab. The driver has told authorities that he does not think that he engaged the hydraulic arm, though it is unclear whether he was aware that his trailer was elevated as he drove.
In the end, workers had to cut down large segments of the sign in order to free the trailer – at an estimated cost of over $100,000. The trucking company that operates the vehicle will likely be left with the bill.
