A Houston police officer who pulled over a car with its headlights off was shocked to find that the driver of the vehicle had a dead pedestrian crumbled in the passenger side of his car.
According to the Houston Chronicle, 45-year-old James John Onak was driving on the Gulf Freeway after midnight last Tuesday when he struck and killed 32-year-old Fadel Steadman. Steadman, whose car had broken down on the side of the road, had been seen running across the freeway by other motorists. When he was struck by Onak, he crashed into the windshield and came to rest on the passenger seat of the car. Police believe that Onak was so intoxicated during the crash that he did not realize what had happened.
When a police officer pulled Onak over about three miles later, the driver displayed signs of intoxication – and admitted that he thought he might have hit something. He was arrested and charged with fleeing the scene of an accident, not rendering aid, and driving while intoxicated. He could face up to ten years in prison and significant fines.
Police later recovered Onak’s license plate at the scene of the hit-and-run accident as well as the severed leg of the pedestrian. It is unclear why Steadman was running across the freeway at the time of the fatal collision.
