Just weeks after an incredible full-face transplant surgery, a Fort Worth man who was injured in a construction accident has returned home to his family and is readjusting to his new life and his new appearance.
In 2008, Dallas Wiens was working a construction job and high in a cherry-picker when his head came into contact with a high-voltage electrical line. He suffered severe electrical burns on his face and side and was unconscious for months following the on-the-job accident. Emergency responders flew Wiens via helicopter to the Burn Critical Care Unit at Parkland Hospital, where he underwent over 20 surgeries to reconstruct his face. While his brain and other vital organs were miraculously unharmed in the worker accident, Wiens lost one eye, his teeth, and all of his facial features.
Last month, the man traveled across the country to participate in one of the first full face transplants in the world. Now, he has a nose, a mouth, and even hair. He has regained feeling in his face as well – and says that his quality of life has improved significantly since the operation. While Wiens is still legally blind and cannot return to work, he is looking forward to being fitted for prosthetic teeth and working on a book about his experiences over the past three years.
