Texas Accident Victims - News You Can Use

Antibacterial peptide therapy for Texas burn injuries looks promising

Posted on Nov 29, 2010

One of the greatest worries for burn injury victims is the possibility that their burn will become infected.  Because a great deal of skin can be lost when a person is burned, bacteria can easily enter the wound and cause a variety of problems.

Doctors have many ways they try to prevent and cure burn infections – and their arsenal of treatments may be getting bigger.  A new type of therapy – an antibacterial peptide – has been shown to be effective in treating soldiers suffering from infected burn or blast wounds.  The therapy may prove useful for burn injury victims hurt in car accidents, truck wrecks, bus crashes, workplace accidents or those burned by an unsafe product.

According to a research study published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, an injection of the peptide A3-APO was more effective than currently used measures for treating burned or wounded soldiers infected with bacteria that are resistant to multiple drugs.

Drug resistance is a major issue for injured soldiers, and is becoming more of a problem for civilians as well.  Burn victims who spend time in the hospital are at a higher risk of contracting a drug-resistant bacterial infection than those who are not hospitalized.

The A3-APO is, according to researchers, the first peptide that is more effective in combatting multi-drug resistant infections in humans than anything else currently available.  Clinical trials are expected to begin soon.
