Two teens were injured – one seriously – in an I-45 exit ramp car accident near Texas City in Galveston County. According to the Galveston Daily News and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, the car lost control on the exit ramp while heading northbound and left the roadway. While the passenger received non-life-threatening injuries in the Texas wreck, the driver of the vehicle, 18-year-old Asa Stanton, was critically injured.
After the Sunday evening accident, Stanton was rushed to a nearby hospital for the treatment of what appeared to be a traumatic brain injury. The car rolled after leaving the roadway and Stanton was thrown from the vehicle.
A car of friends that were directly behind Stanton’s vehicle also crashed on the same exit ramp on I-45 just seconds after the first accident. Authorities are not sure whether the cars were racing, speeding, or driving recklessly – or whether the second car was following too closely behind the first and crashed while avoiding the first accident. It is unclear whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. No one in the second car of teens was seriously injured in the crash, in which the vehicle struck a retaining wall.
News of this Texas City car accident comes just days after the Texas Department of Transportation released a new study regarding the most dangerous roads across the state for teen drivers. Interstate 45 near Texas City is on the list.
