20 People Injured In Dallas DART Escalator Accident

Posted on May 23, 2011

A group of students, teachers, and chaperons from Thompson Elementary School in Quinlan, Texas, were injured last week when the escalator they were on malfunctioned, sending the students tumbling to the bottom of the device. The escalator accident took place at a Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) station just before noon on May 6.

According to the Associated Press, the group was on a down escalator at Mockingbird Station in Dallas when the escalator jolted and sped up suddenly, causing the students to fall forward to the lower level, with many kids falling on top of others. All in all, 18 students and two adults were injured in the escalator accident. Seven children were taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas for treatment, though the most serious injury is believed to be a broken leg. Both of the adults involved in the accident were taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital for treatment for minor injuries. The remainder of children involved in the accident were treated for cuts, sprains, and bruises at the scene by emergency responders.

It remains unclear what caused the escalator to malfunction. It is currently not in use and the accident is under investigation by DART officials and engineers. One teacher said that they pushed the emergency stop button, but that the escalator continued to function.

The children were part of a choir performing in the city that weekend and were exploring Dallas before their performance.
