Options for Texas car accident victims suffering from back pain

If you are suffering from back pain after a Texas car wreck, workplace injury, or other accident, you may be wondering what options you have for treating it. There are a variety of ways your doctor may choose to help you with your pain, with the goal of reducing your pain and restoring your ability to move.

Some Treatments for Back Pain

Depending on the nature and severity of your back injury, your doctor may recommend that you try one or more of the following:

  • Hot or cold packs: Alternating between hot and cold packs may temporarily relieve back pain.
  • Exercise: With your doctor’s approval, you can try different types of exercises to ease your pain – flexion, extension, stretches, or aerobic exercise.
  • Painkillers: Depending on the severity of your pain, you may find pain relief with an over-the-counter painkiller. Pain killers can be taken by mouth, or topical (applied to the skin) painkillers can be used. If your pain is severe, talk to your doctor about prescription painkiller drugs.
  • Bed rest: You may think that resting your back is a good idea, but unless there is a good reason for you to remain immobile this is usually not recommended, and can actually make your pain worse. Talk to your doctor about his or her recommendations for resting vs. exercising.
  • Physical therapy / exercise: Within 24 to 72 hours of your back injury, you may be able to start controlled exercise or physical therapy to help with your pain and restore your movement. Physical therapy can include ultrasound treatments, massage, whirlpool baths, and strengthening exercises.
  • Muscle relaxers: In the past, muscle relaxers were used more than they are now. While some doctors still recommend them, you should know that muscle relaxers work on the brain, not your muscles, so they don’t provide true relief.

If these options don’t work for you, ask your doctor about being referred to a back pain specialist. A specialist may recommend back surgery, radiofrequency ablation, electrical stimulation, or other new or sophisticated treatments.

Do you need help getting fair compensation to pay for your medical bills after an accident?

If you are suffering from back pain because of an accident that was not your fault, you may need to seek medical treatment for that and other injuries. This can all add up and be costly to pay for. However, if somebody else caused your accident their insurance company should foot the bill. Please contact us as soon as possible to talk about your options – for no cost or obligation.
