Toyota recall lawyer provides summary of “Unintended Acceleration” problem

Confused by all the recalls issued by Toyota? You are not alone. With hundreds of news stories being published every day about the issues at Toyota and the various recalls that have come out since late last year, it is difficult to understand what is really wrong with Toyota’s vehicles and what they plan on doing to fix the problems – and if they even have a fix that works.

The issue that has captured everyone’s attention is the problem of “unintended acceleration”, which means that the Toyota vehicle accelerates out of control and cannot be stopped. The problem has been blamed on poorly designed floor mats, a faulty accelerator pedal design, and sticky throttles. Skeptics believe there may be more to the issue, and suggest that electronic interference with the new electronic throttles used in newer Toyota vehicles could be part of the problem.

Here is a brief summary of the two big “unintended acceleration” recalls, with links for further reading:

Toyota’s floor mat entrapment recall

  • Problem: Due to a faulty floor mat / accelerator pedal design, the pedal could become trapped under the floor mat, causing the vehicle to accelerate unexpectedly.
  • Solution: Remove your driver’s side floor mat and visit your dealer for a fix. Some vehicles will receive new floor mats, others will have new accelerator pedals installed as well.
  • Affected vehicles: 2007-2010 Camry, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2004-2009 Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2007-2010 ES 350, 2006-2010 IS 250 and IS350, 2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Venza, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe.

Toyota’s “sticky accelerator pedal” recall

  • Problem: The accelerator / throttle in affected vehicles can become “sticky”, causing the pedal to move slowly from the open to closed position and even become stuck open. If this happens, the vehicle will seem to accelerate unexpectedly, which could lead to a crash.
  • Solution: When you receive a notice in the mail from Toyota, visit your dealer for a free fix. However, if you notice that your accelerator pedal is starting to “stick”, Toyota advises that you stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact your dealer immediately.
  • Affected vehicles: Certain 2009-2010 RAV4, Certain 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, Certain 2007-2010 Camry, Certain 2009 Camry Hybrid, Certain 2010 Highlander, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2008-2010 Sequoia.

Has your vehicle been recalled?

You can search for any recalled vehicle, go to www.safecar.gov to search for recall information in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) database. Toyota is also hosting a webpage where you can enter your vehicle’s identification number (VIN) to find out if it is affected by the recall.
