How would you feel if you found out that there was a device in your car recording information about your speed, throttle position, brake use, seat belt use, and more? Many Houston drivers might find this surprising, but if you own a newer vehicle then you probably have what is called an “event data recorder” (EDR) in your vehicle right now.
These devices are also called “black boxes”, and just like the black boxes on airplanes they can be used to research what happened in the event of a serious auto accident. Data is continuously recorded, but is not saved unless the device detects a crash event. If you are involved in a collision, then data from a few seconds before the crash, during the crash, and after the crash is preserved.
Auto manufacturers originally installed these black box devices in their vehicles to research how airbags and antilock brakes were performing in crashes. However, now that more and more manufacturers are installing them as standard equipment, the NHTSA has mandated that they be installed in all vehicles as of 2013.
NHTSA also added one very important provision. EDR data must be easily accessible to investigators, which means that the data has to be in a format that is easy to understand and that can be downloaded without proprietary software or equipment. Right now it can be challenging to get data out of these devices, and some auto manufacturers – like Toyota – are very reluctant to share EDR data.
If you’ve been the victim of a serious car crash in Texas and are trying to prove that the other driver was in fact at fault, you might find the news that a device like this exists a godsend. Think about it – if the other driver and the insurance company are denying fault, yet you know that the other driver made serious mistakes, wouldn’t it be nice to have the data to back it up?
